Top 8 Albums of 2009: #8

Lily Allen - It's Not Me, It's You

Relying on her unique mix of swagger, sardonic wit and pop sensibility, Lily Allen almost reaches the dizzying heights of her debut album with this much-delayed follow-up. Stylistically, It's Not Me is a barrage of various sonic and lyrical temperament, all fitting nicely within the slick Brit sound that's already become her trademark. "The Fear" is pure bubblegum satire, "Chinese" is beautifully vulnerable, and "He Wasn't There" is delightful, understated 1920's revamp. Even the Taylor Swift-esque faux-country of "Not Fair" works when juxtaposed with the uncomfortably brash tales of a sexually incapable boyfriend; after decades of misogynistic hip hop, the world could use a little more female chauvanism.
