Top 8 Albums of 2009: #7

Camera Obscura – My Maudlin Career

A line from “Forest and Sands” captures the album’s tone perfectly: “It feels like none of this is real/I pretend like my heart and my head are well.” On the exterior, My Maudlin Career is all softened vocals, syrupy strings, and throwback choral ooh-ooh-oohs, a rich and evocative aesthetic that is at times delicate (“Careless Love”) and at other times carefree (“French Navy”). Underneath the surface, however, it’s all unraveling at the seams. “The Sweetest Thing" nails the inner conflict; only Camera Obscura can make a helpless line like “I’m going on a date tonight to try to fall in love with you/I know this a crime but I don’t know what else to do” appear so deceitfully saccharine.
